The Cave
فَٱنطَلَقَاso they both set out حَتَّىٰٓuntil إِذَاwhen رَكِبَاthey had embarked فِىon ٱلسَّفِينَةِthe ship خَرَقَهَاhe made a hole in it قَالَhe said أَخَرَقْتَهَاhave you made at لِتُغْرِقَto drown أَهْلَهَاits people لَقَدْcertainly جِئْتَyou have done شَيْـًٔاa thing إِمْرًاgrave٧١ Āyah 71
قَالَhe said أَلَمْdid not أَقُلْi say إِنَّكَindeed you لَنnever تَسْتَطِيعَwill be able مَعِىَwith me صَبْرًا(to have) patience٧٢ Āyah 72
قَالَhe said لَا(do) not تُؤَاخِذْنِىblame me بِمَاfor what نَسِيتُi forgot وَلَاand (do) not تُرْهِقْنِىbe hard (upon) me مِنْin أَمْرِىmy affair عُسْرًا(raising) difficulty٧٣ Āyah 73
فَٱنطَلَقَاthen they both set out حَتَّىٰٓuntil إِذَاwhen لَقِيَاthey met غُلَٰمًاa boy فَقَتَلَهُۥthen he killed him قَالَhe said أَقَتَلْتَhave you killed نَفْسًاa soul زَكِيَّةًۢpure بِغَيْرِfor other than نَفْسٍa soul لَّقَدْcertainly جِئْتَyou have done شَيْـًٔاa thing نُّكْرًاevil٧٤ Āyah 74
قَالَhe said أَلَمْdid not أَقُلi say لَّكَto you إِنَّكَthat you لَنnever تَسْتَطِيعَwill be able مَعِىَwith me صَبْرًا(to have) patience٧٥ Āyah 75
قَالَhe said إِنif سَأَلْتُكَi ask you عَنabout شَىْءٍۭanything بَعْدَهَاafter it فَلَاthen (do) not تُصَٰحِبْنِىkeep me as a companion قَدْverily بَلَغْتَyou have reached مِنfrom me لَّدُنِّىfrom me عُذْرًاan excuse٧٦ Āyah 76
فَٱنطَلَقَاso they set out حَتَّىٰٓuntil إِذَآwhen أَتَيَآthey came أَهْلَ(to the) people قَرْيَةٍ(of) a town ٱسْتَطْعَمَآthey asked for food أَهْلَهَا(from) its people فَأَبَوْا۟but they refused أَنto يُضَيِّفُوهُمَاoffer them hospitality فَوَجَدَاthen they found فِيهَاin it جِدَارًاa wall يُرِيدُ(that) want(ed) أَنto يَنقَضَّcollapse فَأَقَامَهُۥso he set it straight قَالَhe said لَوْif شِئْتَyou wished لَتَّخَذْتَsurely you (could) have taken عَلَيْهِfor it أَجْرًاa payment٧٧ Āyah 77
قَالَhe said هَٰذَاthis فِرَاقُ(is) parting بَيْنِىbetween me وَبَيْنِكَand between you سَأُنَبِّئُكَi will inform you بِتَأْوِيلِof (the) interpretation مَا(of) what لَمْnot تَسْتَطِعyou were able عَّلَيْهِon it صَبْرًا(to have) patience٧٨ Āyah 78
أَمَّاas for ٱلسَّفِينَةُthe ship فَكَانَتْit was لِمَسَٰكِينَof (the) poor people يَعْمَلُونَworking فِىin ٱلْبَحْرِthe sea فَأَرَدتُّso i intended أَنْthat أَعِيبَهَاi cause defect (in) it وَكَانَ(as there) was وَرَآءَهُمafter them مَّلِكٌa king يَأْخُذُwho seized كُلَّevery سَفِينَةٍship غَصْبًا(by) force٧٩ Āyah 79
وَأَمَّاand as for ٱلْغُلَٰمُthe boy فَكَانَhis parents were أَبَوَاهُhis parents were مُؤْمِنَيْنِbelievers فَخَشِينَآand we feared أَنthat يُرْهِقَهُمَاhe would overburden them طُغْيَٰنًا(by) transgression وَكُفْرًاand disbelief٨٠ Āyah 80
فَأَرَدْنَآso we intended أَنthat يُبْدِلَهُمَاwould change for them رَبُّهُمَاtheir lord خَيْرًاa better مِّنْهُthan him زَكَوٰةً(in) purity وَأَقْرَبَand nearer رُحْمًا(in) affection٨١ Āyah 81
وَأَمَّاand as for ٱلْجِدَارُthe wall فَكَانَit was لِغُلَٰمَيْنِfor two orphan boys يَتِيمَيْنِfor two orphan boys فِىin ٱلْمَدِينَةِthe town وَكَانَand was تَحْتَهُۥunderneath it كَنزٌa treasure لَّهُمَاfor them وَكَانَand was أَبُوهُمَاtheir father صَٰلِحًاrighteous فَأَرَادَso intended رَبُّكَyour lord أَنthat يَبْلُغَآthey reach أَشُدَّهُمَاtheir maturity وَيَسْتَخْرِجَاand bring forth كَنزَهُمَاtheir treasure رَحْمَةً(as) a mercy مِّنfrom رَّبِّكَyour lord وَمَاand not فَعَلْتُهُۥi did it عَنْon أَمْرِىmy (own) accord ذَٰلِكَthat تَأْوِيلُ(is the) interpretation مَا(of) what لَمْnot تَسْطِعyou were able عَّلَيْهِon it صَبْرًا(to have) patience٨٢ Āyah 82
